Recent study confirms benefit of simulation training in obstetrics
A C-section is performed when a vaginal birth carries a higher risk for complications, as seen in breech positions, premature labor, viral infections, and placenta praevia and when labor does not progress normally.
With a rising trend towards Cesarean sections due to different factors, it becomes more and more important to educate patient about potential complications and to train healthcare staff in performing complicated deliveries and Cesarean sections.
3B Scientific offers a comprehensive range of educational tool, medical simulators and birthing phantoms to train all aspects of obstetrics. A special highlight during Cesarean Awareness Month is the line of C-Celia C-section Simulators by Operative Experience.
C-Celia obstetric simulators focus on performing C-sections and are ideal to train the entire team with scenario-based simulation. Simulation training is a proven method of learning and has many benefits. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) now requires simulation to be utilized in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) training programs.
A recent study was published by Lisa Foglia, et. al, (Creation and Evaluation of a Cesarean Section Simulator Training Program for Novice Obstetric Surgeons) that used Operative Experience’s Emergency Obstetrics Suite and compared the use of this simulator with traditional teaching methods. The objective of the study was to evaluate the performance of a high-fidelity simulator program to train novice providers on cesarean delivery and postpartum hemorrhage management. The results of this study are impressive.
The study showed that the simulation trained group had significantly better performance for the cesarean section procedural steps as well as hemorrhage management. They also had significantly higher overall scores for all aspects of the simulation.
