이소골의 역할은 전정창을 통해 고막에서 들어오는 소리를 전달하여 소리를 증폭시키는 것입니다. 내이는 외부의 소음으로 인한 지속적인 손상이 발생되지 않도록 근육의 움직임을 발생시키는 반사작용에 의해 보호됩니다(등자근). 단시간 동안 중이의 등자골이 기울어져 소리가 부분적으로만 전달되게 됩니다. 만일 이소골이 너무 심하게 흔들리는 경우(예:재채기 또는 기침) 긴장근이 망치뼈에 달라붙어 고막을 수축시켜 보호합니다.
귀경화증은 이소골이 영향을 받아 경화하여 청력이 상실되는 대표적인 질환입니다.

The three smallest bones that are joined to each other in the human body are located in the middle ear and are referred to as the auditory ossicles: malleus (hammer), incus (anvil) und stapes (stirrup). Their job is to transmit incoming sound from the eardrum via the vestibular window to the inner ear and mechanically amplify the sound. The inner ear must be protected from lasting harm which can be caused by loud noise., this is achieved by a reflex that triggers muscle movement (stapedius muscle). causing the stapes to tilt for a short time and therefore sound can only be partially transmitted. If the auditory ossicles are shaken too vigorously (e.g. a sneeze or a cough), another muscle (tensor timpani) provides protection, by sticking to the hammer and tightening the eardrum. Otosclerosis is a typical condition that affects the auditory ossicles, causing them to stiffen, leading to increasing loss of hearing.
