In this experiment Coulomb’s law is investigated. The setup allows to derive Coulomb’s formula experimentally: the determination of the Coulomb force F of two electrically charged spheres (with charge q1 and q2) is at the center of the analysis. The spheres are considered as point charges; the centers of the spheres are at a distance r from each other.

The following parts of this experiment are discussed:
1. Charge quantity q1 and q2 of the spheres as a function of the applied high voltage.
2. Dependence of the Coulomb force F on the quantity of charge q1 and q2 with fixed distance between the spheres r  F  q1F  q2
3. Dependence of the Coulomb force F on the distance between the spheres r with fixed charge q1 and q2 of the spheres   F  1/r2
4. Determination of the vacuum electric permittivity  ε0  F = q· q2 / (4 π εr2)

Advantages of using the positioning system PS400:
The positioning system PS400 (item no. 1023791) used in this experiment ensures fast and precise setting of the sphere distance. In addition, the use of a control unit as part of the positioning system (remote controlled) ensures that the person exercising the experiment is in sufficient distance to the charged spheres and therefore does not exert any disturbing influence on the electric field.

Advantages of using the charge storage device:
The charge storage device is part of the Experiment Set Coulomb's law (item no. 1023721, in the scope of the delivery). In combination with the High Voltage Power Supply 25 kV (item no. 1023789, also included in the scope of delivery), safe, fast and reproducible charging of the spheres is realized. With the charge storage device, both positive and negative charges can be transferred to the spheres.
