The Empathy Lungs are unique in that they simulate first hand the shortness of breath and breathlessness of symptoms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Asthma, and Lung Cancer. When used correctly and for periods of short time (15 to 30 minutes) this Empathy Lung simulator causes the wearer to physically experience strenuous, labored, and shallow breathing along with the accompanying fatigue, irritability, and emotional distress that comes with the feeling of not being able to get enough air. The Empathy Lungs measurably reduce the wearer’s total lung capacity, which can be seen by measuring their Peak Expiratory Flow rates, which is measured on a Peak Flow Meter. Over 45 million patients are effected by COPD and 90% of these are a result of smoking tobacco. Today this serious smoking related disease is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S. alone and is projected to become the 3rd. The Empathy Lungs are an invaluable teaching tool for educators and medical professionals alike teaching the effects of tobacco use.
